Thinking of a Concept

What I learnt

From doing this task I learnt about all of the different aspects of my magazine I need to think about. For example I had to brainstorm ideas for the name of my magazine and other factors. I also learnt that it is not an easy process deciding about these important features of my magazine.

Alignment Planning - MixMag

What I learnt

In this task i learned about the alignment of features of magazine front covers, contents pages and double page spreads. I also learned about the features if a contents, front cover or double page spread which makes it look professional and tidy.

Analysis of camera angles in music magazines

What I learnt: I learnt about the many different camera shots that are used in music magazines. Examples of these are mid shots, long shots, mid wide shots and many others. I also learnt about how important the split of the two pages of double page spreads so they don't interfere with the image.

What I have learnt

By doing this task I have learnt about analysing front covers of music magazines. I learnt about the different colour schemes that are used, usually depending on the genre of the artist on the front cover. Bright colours for popular artists in the charts and dark colours for bands.

Flat Plan for MixMag

What I learnt?

By doing this activity I have learnt that there are a lot of advertisements to pay for magazine as well as many double page spread articles.  In my magazine I will make sure that I include the same ratio of adverts as well as the double pages.

Contents Page Checklist

What I learnt

By doing this task I learnt about the features of contents pages. For example I learnt that pictures with captions are widely used in contents pages to break up text so it is easier to read. I also learnt that contents pages usually have a list pf contents and a summary of the article on that page.

Double Page Spread Checklist

What I learnt

By doing this task I learnt about the different features of double page spreads. For example it is common in double page spreads to have one main photo. I also learnt that it is common to have a quote from the artist that the double page spread is about. This is used as it sets the tone for the article.

Magazines in a Shop

How many magazines are on sale?
There are around 20 different music magazines on sale and about 5 of each on the shelves.

How many different genres of magazines are on sale?
There are many genres of music magazines on sale such as rock, hip-hop and pop.

What is the positioning of the music magazines in the store?
Magazines such as ‘Top of The Pops’ are mostly positioned at the front of the shelves whereas magazines such as ‘Kerrang!’ sometimes have rude language or imagery on the front cover so we keep them near the back and reasonably high up on the shelves so children can’t see them.

Which magazines are at the front of the stand and at the back?
As I already stated, we keep magazines such as ‘Kerrang’ high up and at the back of the shelves so young children can’t see them.

What parts of the magazine are on show the most and which part is shown the least?
The top of the magazine is mostly on show so the masthead is clear which is really all you need because there is not that much information on the bottom of the front cover.

How clear is the name of the magazine on the shelves and is the price clear?
The title of the magazine is always very clear as it as the top of most magazines in bold and clear text so it is very hard to miss. The price is not very clear on any of the magazines as it is always positioned near the barcode at the bottom of the front cover in a very small font.
